Summer Wedding Looks

Hi, friends! Wedding season is upon us! While we only have one wedding on our calendar thus far, I was having so much fun creating a wedding guest outfit that I put together three for you! Since I absolutely love using Rent the Runway* (I rented dresses for the last two weddings we attended), each dress and some of the accessories are available through RTR.

The first outfit was inspired by my sister-in-law. She rented this very dress for a black tie wedding and looked gorgeous. While the wedding we'll be attending isn't this formal, it's fun to dream and hopefully inspire you.

I'd say that this dress and ensemble is a little closer to what I'll actually wear to our friends' wedding. It's less formal than the pink dress, but still dressed up. I also love the colors and pattern of the dress. And that peek of pink on the pumps? Such a fun surprise!

Finally, here's what I might wear if we were invited to an outdoor wedding. A bit more casual, but the necklace dresses things up. And the wedges will ensure that I don't sink into the ground while walking.

I don't know about you, but this week seemed to drag on forever. Add some rain and cloudy skies and I've practically self-diagnosed myself with seasonal affective disorder. One thing that helps me get through the week is having something fun to look forward to on the weekend. Sometimes it's just going for a walk as a family. Other times it's trying a new-to-us restaurant or cooking a new recipe. Once the weather gets consistently warmer, I'm sure we'll go out for ice cream or Italian ice.

Traveling by Car with a Baby

Christmas is next week!!! I don't know about you, but I'm not ready. Before cozying up with family, I still need to purchase a few more gifts, wrap presents, and bake Christmas cookies. And some years include a drive to Ohio to be with my family. Since we've already taken a few road trips with Monica, including going to her first wedding, I thought I would share a few tips for those taking their first long drive with a baby.

Allow extra time to make extra stops
Traffic and wintery weather already contribute to longer than usual travel times. Add a baby to the mix and drive times can increase by a few hours. You never know when an atomic diaper will strike, how long naps will be, or if someone will want to eat again. In conjunction with the inevitable diaper changes, we've learned to make time for extra "wiggle" stops. Babies are just like adults in that they want to stretch out and move around after being seated in the car for a while.

Have one person sit in the backseat
One of us I have been sitting in the backseat with Monica almost exclusively since bringing her home from the hospital. 95% of the time, she's a chill baby and fine sitting by herself. But that 5% when she is fussy can be excruciating. To help prevent and combat the fussies, we bring an assortment of toys, books, and a pacifier. Some of the toys are her favorites and others are new things she hasn't played with yet. 

Though sometimes you just have to stop the car. While driving home from a recent trip to St. Louis, Monica took a 1.5 hour nap, which is pretty amazing for her. Not so amazing was when she woke up hangry and wailing. I was driving and we were stuck in traffic on the highway. John was sitting with her in the backseat, trying to soothe and distract her until we could exit the highway. Her bottles were in a cooler and the milk was way too cold to drink. Needless to say, we had to pull over to the side of the road where I could nurse Monica back to happy.

Carry a well stocked diaper bag
In addition to the usual suspects, it's helpful to have extra extra diapers, wipes, diaper cream, outfits, swaddle blankets, and trash bags in your diaper bag. This includes extra outfits for mom and dad because super spit up and explosive diapers seem to happen on the go. And since rest stop bathrooms can be questionable, be sure to bring a travel-friendly changing pad.

Pump on the go
While Monica tends to prefer her milk straight from the source, sometimes it's easier for us to give her a bottle on the road, especially when she gets hungry in between rest stops. Plus, I still feel a little self-conscious about nursing in public. Enter the manual pump or electric pump with a battery pack or car lighter adapter. Then I use the pump and accessory wipes for quick clean up. Freshly pumped milk will then keep about 5 hours at room temperature or 24 hours in an insulated cooler with ice packs.

Try not to pack the kitchen sink
This one is easier said than done, but babies really only need clothes, diapers, and food. If you forget something critical, you can probably buy it on the road or at your destination.

A Wedding Guest Dress (with a Baby!)

Hi, friends! It's been a while since I've joined the Friday's Saturday's Fancies fun and this week's "holiday party" theme couldn't come sooner. My cousin is getting married this month, so I've been brainstorming what to wear.

Most of my dresses are summery or not quite baby/nursing friendly. Thank goodness for Rent the Runway! I have the above dress scheduled for delivery that meets all of my needs:

• Looks good on a still slightly funky postpartum body: A wrap dress (by the queen of wrap dresses!) is pretty forgiving and they're sending my dress in two sizes.
• Made of soft material: Sequins need not apply since they'll scratch Monica.
• Easy access to the boobies: A V-neck or crisscrossed neckline is preferable.
• I can wear a regular (nursing) bra.

Last time I rented a dress, I was trying to hide a mini baby bump. Now that Monica is here, renting a dress is a fabulous idea because I don't have to worry about being spit up on! RTR includes a small insurance policy with each rental and dry cleaning is also included.

And since the wedding is out of town, I'm having the dress delivered directly to Ohio. Having one less thing to worry about packing is another perk of renting. And then I just pop the dress back in the mail after the wedding.

Friends, I need your advice. My basic black flats have bit the dust. Between years of wear and tear and swollen pregnancy feet, it's time to invest in a new pair. I can easily throw down $100+ for a new pair of running shoes, but am having trouble pulling the trigger on dressier shoes. Beyond that, I'm torn between all of the options: plain vs. embellished, matte leather vs. patent leather vs. suede, rounded vs. pointy, etc.

Fall Favorites

Hey there, Fall. Fancy seeing you around these parts. I wouldn't say that you're my #1 season, but I do appreciate your cohorts: blazers, scarves, boots, and pumpkin ale/spice latte/baked goods/etc. We'll also have to fit in a little apple picking and apple baking soon.

It may have been in the 60's yesterday, but that didn't stop me from donning my navy blazer, boots, and a scarf. And while we're at it, can we discuss this scarf? Is it too early to put things on my Christmas list because I'm mildly obsessed. This lovely would go with everything!

Our Fifth Wedding Anniversary

Happy anniversary to my best friend! I can't believe it's already been five years! We've seen all sorts of changes these past five years: moving to Chicago, buying a house, changing jobs, and having a baby. And I couldn't think of a better person to experience them with than you :)

While we're more likely to go out to dinner or take a long weekend trip than give gifts, I thought I would share a few gift ideas based on the traditional fifth anniversary gift: wood.

That wood clutch is a little out of my price range, but isn't it gorgeous? I would love to take it with me to a fancy pants anniversary dinner.

In related news, we went to Graham Elliot (the restaurant) for an anniversary dinner two years ago and he replied to my tweet about our amazing dinner.

The Perfect Post-Baby Skirt

Friends! I just found the perfect post-baby skirt! Last weekend, we went shopping at the new outlet mall in Chicago. And of course I wanted to check out J. Crew Factory. I saw this skirt when crafting last week's post and tucked it away for future use and/or purchase. It looked so cute on the model that I had to try it on in person.

And I loved it.

John was waiting outside the dressing room with Monica while I was trying on clothes. When I emerged from the dressing room and asked for his opinion, one of the first things out of his mouth was, "Is that an elastic waistband?" And I proudly answered, "Yes!" 

The stretchy waistband is beyond comfortable and perfect for the post-baby body when things are still a little soft and figuring themselves out. It's also a great piece for those early in their pregnancy. And who am I kidding, wear this skirt and don't feel guilty for having a second scoop of ice cream this weekend :)

Some might argue that a maxi skirt is more forgiving and serves the same purpose. But I'm loving the slightly structured shape of this skirt because it automatically makes me feel more put together. And the cobalt is so fun! You can dress this girl up or down. I plan on wearing it on my first day back to work.

Back to Work

The local schools are back in session, and I'm having my own back to school moment of sorts. My maternity leave is winding down, which means it's back-to-work-time for me. To say I have mixed feelings is an understatement. While I'm excited for a little more adult interaction and to stretch my brain muscles, I'm not looking forward to sacrificing the snuggles with my little lady.

This is my first time going back to work, so I don't know how it'll go emotionally. Yes, I know I won't stop thinking about her during the day and will count down the minutes until I can scoop her up and give her a big hug and kiss again. But how hard will these emotions hit? I felt a shift is priorities when we got engaged and then married, so I can only imagine the scope of my emotions now that I'm a MOM. Monica has rolled from her front to back and is currently working on kicking herself over from her back to front. Will I miss a milestone while she's at daycare? Mommy guilt is a beast.

And then there's the (hopefully not too much) stress of pumping at work. I've been nursing exclusively, with only a bottle on occasion, so I'm not sure how much she'll be drinking during the day. And whether I'll be able to pump enough for her. We have to provide daycare a can of formula just in case, but I'd really like to avoid that. Personal preference and no judgment on the mamas who need to supplement with formula or use formula exclusively. Every mama needs to do what's best for themselves and their little one.

On a lighter note, I'm looking forward to wearing "real" clothes again! Though I might have to take an inventory of said "real" clothes before going back to work to be sure I have things to wear! Sure, I still occasionally wear maternity clothes, but I don't want my coworkers to think I'm pregnant again. Perhaps a little "back to work" shopping is in order this weekend ;)

Running Errands with a Two-Month-Old Baby

Earlier this week, Monica and I did a little "back to school" shopping because when I go back to work, she'll be making all sorts of new baby friends at daycare. Even though we just went to Target, I wanted to "dress up." I've been getting tired of my shorts and T-shirt routine and decided to mix it up with my skinny jeans and a white button down shirt in a half tuck. I know...let's not go too crazy!

While this outfit is similar to what I'd wear pre-baby, it's also pretty strategic as a mom. The button down allows for easy access to breastfeed, the thick belt hides the fact that my jeans are zipped but unbuttoned, and the Gap jeggings suck everything in. Don't believe me? MODG did a two-part post on skinny jeans for moms. And my trusty Gap jeggings were the reigning champ.

Of course, we can't forget the diaper bag. During the last few weeks of pregnancy, I stressed (and possibly cried) about the diaper bag. Thank you, pregnancy hormones. I asked friends for recommendations and did some extensive mom blog research. I wanted a diaper bag that didn't scream "diaper bag." Plus, it would be nice if John could carry the bag without feeling emasculated. And I didn't want to spend beaucoup bucks on it.

I thought the Skip*Hop Duo in French stripe was a good option, but I never pulled the trigger. John suggested (and I vetoed) using one of the several duffle bags in our basement. Turns out, we had another contender hiding in our closets. I present to your our diaper bag:

A black Gap messenger bag circa 2001. I figured it was worth a try before spending any money on a new bag. And two months later it's still working for us. The cross-body strap is critical for easy toting and it has several pockets/compartments to hold baby and mommy essentials:

For Monica:

• Diapers (duh)
• Wipes
• Changing pad (these are working for now)
• Diaper cream, though we use this sparingly
• Hand sanitizer
• Plastic bags for dirty diapers (These hold in the smell really well! I accidentally carried around a dirty diaper in one of these bags for over a day and didn't smell it at all.)
• Extra Soothie pacifier
• Extra outfit and socks
• Aden + Anais swaddle blanket (Helpful when the air conditioning is blasting. I also use this as a nursing cover.)
• Aden + Anais burpy bib (So big and soft! Can be used as a burp cloth or a bib.)
• Bottle if I know we'll be out longer and/or I don't want to nurse in public

Obviously there will be additions and subtractions based on the weather. And as Monica gets older, we'll have to add toys (like Sophie!) and snacks to the mix.

For me (in addition to the usual suspects: wallet, phone, car keys, lip gloss, sunglasses, pen/pad of paper):

• Water bottle (breastfeeding makes you thirsty!)
• Granola bar/small snack (it also makes you hungry!)
• Lansinoh nursing pads for any boob leakage
• Tide to Go pen

Inspired by Tomatoes

Friends....we have a situation on our hands. And that would be the obscene amount of tomatoes coming from our garden. Yes, we partially brought it on ourselves with the four cherry tomato plants. Between those and the plants that randomly popped up from last year's tomatoes and the compost we have more tomato plants than I'd care to count.

In addition to sharing our bumper crop, we've been preparing all sorts of tomato-heavy dishes: caprese salad (I'd also love to try this version with peaches), caprese burgers, roasted veggie pasta, and Mediterranean quinoa. Also on the list of recipes to try are Portillo's chopped salad (so what if the tomato is more of a garnish?), linguine with clams and blistered tomatoes, and a tomato tart.

With this week's arrival of the royal baby, I was inspired to recreate one of my favorite Kate Middleton looks: her going away ensemble from the day after their wedding.

One thing I love about the Duchess is that she's just as comfortable (and gorgeous) wearing clothes accessible to "the people" as she is wearing designer labels. It's all about finding the brands and styles that look good on your body, not about the names or numbers on the labels.

Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot

Hi there! How has your week been? It's brutally hot in Chicago (like so many other places), so most of my time has been spent in the air conditioning. That would be standard during a typical work week, but I'm having a little cabin fever since I'm on maternity leave.

Fortunately, we have plans to get out of the house by volunteering (and attending) SummerFest at our church this weekend. A few local bands played last night with the final act playing the likes of Santana and bluesy George Thorogood and Stevie Ray Vaughn. The next few nights should be fun with some great 80's cover bands.

As for my Friday's Fancies outfit, I kept things realistic this time around. All of the pieces are on sale and less than $50 a piece! Not bad for an easy summer outfit.

Hi, friends! Just wanted to pop in with a quick post during nap time. What's new with you? All is well in baby-land.

As for getting-dressed-in-the-morning-land....that's another subject. Earlier this week, Meagan of Mo Pie, Please touched on her go-to summer outfit of shorts and a T-shirt thanks to her, as she puts it, "weird post-partum body." Being one month post-partum myself, I couldn't agree more. Sure, I was wearing non-maternity shorts and a tank top while reading her post, but they fit a little funny.

So thank goodness for a little Friday's Fancies goodness to let me dream up an outfit that I might not otherwise fit into at the current moment!

The Mary Kay Look

Last week, I received a VoxBox full of Mary Kay products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes. Truth be told, I've never used Mary Kay makeup and only have limited knowledge of their multi-level marketing strategy and pink Cadillac loving ways. And let's not forget the Mary Kay consultant that approached me in an Old Navy last year and wouldn't take "no" for an answer.

So color me impressed when I wound up liking what they sent!

The first item I tried out was the True Dimensions lip stick in Pink Cherie. It's bubblegum pink and perfect for summer. The description says the lip stick is, "intensely moisturizing and exquisitely smoothing." I'd have to agree.

I wore it to Mass this past Sunday with my standby eye shadow and mascara. While Monica doesn't look impressed, I loved it and thought it paired nicely with my black maxi and neon pink belt. As a new mom, I also think the pink lip stick is a fast and easy way to feel put together after less than restful nights.

My next two favorites were the Lash Primer and Lash Love Lengthening mascara in I ♥ Black. The lash primer claims to create dramatic definition and fuller-looking lashes while the mascara touts long, strong, separated lashes. I'm no mascara expert, but I've tried out a few in my day since I generally use the latest sample from Sephora or Clinique. While my eye lashes seemed longer and separated, I didn't think they were much fuller than usual. Maybe it's because I don't usually use lash primer and needed to apply a little more.

Next in the box was the Cream Eye Color in Violet Storm. Honestly, I was a little intimidated by the cream eye color since I usually use pressed eye shadow and the color looked a little dark in the pot. To make things easy, I smudged some on with my finger instead of using the cream eye color/concealer brush included in the VoxBox. My first reaction was that it was too dark for me, but when I applied the mascara, it didn't seem as dark. I wouldn't wear this color on a daily basis, but would consider wearing it on date night or when dressed up for something like a wedding paired with a subtle lip gloss.

Since it's time for Friday Fancies, I created an outfit inspired by my favorite item from the Mary Kay VoxBox, the pink lip stick. We're going to a cookout this weekend and would love to wear J. Crew's coral polka dot shorts and tote around baby gear in Kate Spade's popsicle tote.

Due Dates are like the Pirate's Code

So....today's my due date. I'm trying really hard (albeit, unsuccessfully) to remain patient and relaxed and zen-like. Frankly, I didn't think I would go 40 weeks. People keep reminding me that a majority of first babies are born late and that due dates are more like ETA's (only 4% are born on their due date). Which reminds me of "Pirate's of the Caribbean."

Due dates are like the pirate's code...they're more of what you'd call "guidelines."

Maybe this comparison, and thoughts of the Caribbean, will help me chill out a little since one of the relaxation techniques we learned at our Lamaze class is to picture yourself in your relaxing, "happy" place. One of mine would be on the beach and chilling in a hammock with John, which is one thing we did on our honeymoon in Mexico.

So that's what I'm doing this Friday. Looking at beach-y pictures from our honeymoon and thinking of hammocks, sand between my toes, and fruity drinks. Maybe I was on to something when I made myself a faux-jito last night...

Looking Forward to the Weekend

Who's excited for a long holiday weekend? I am! Even with the somewhat chilly weather in Chicago. Unless a certain baby girl decides to make her big appearance in the next few days, I'm hoping to get a haircut and possibly take a field trip to the Randolph Street Market. I still need want to put a few finishing touches on the nursery, including a big letter to hang on the wall. Maybe something like the "D" on our gallery wall. I also plan on sewing a crib skirt, but that isn't super necessary at this point either.

 

I'm sure there will also be some grilling and chilling on the patio next to the fire pit. Last Sunday we made an all-American meal of strip steaks with Lawry's seasoning (yum!), homemade potato salad, and lemonade. I wouldn't mind another repeat this weekend.

The Outfit Repeater

I'm just going to put it out there. When it comes to getting dressed in the morning, I'm done with being pregnant. My belly is reaching epic proportions and only a handful of shirts fit. And some of them are long-sleeved, which I'd rather not wear when the weather is in the 80's. I don't want to buy more shirts and I'd rather not borrow John's t-shirts. My jersey dresses have also been on a tight rotation.

The third trimester is like one massive 30 for 30 remix. I'm sure most people don't notice that I've been repeating outfits, but I'm bored with my options. This whole internal dialog reminds me of a scene from "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" (don't judge):

Kate: ...Lizzie McGuire, you are an outfit repeater!

Lizzie: Okay, I may be an outfit repeater, but you're an outfit rememberer, which is just as pathetic!

I've found myself staring longingly into my closet at the articles of clothing that I haven't worn in months, unsure of when I'll fit into them again: my pink gingham shirt, chambray shirt, pencil skirts, and a variety of other tops. Or I see clothes online or in the store that I'd love to snatch up (Exhibit A: that striped cami).

I'm even running out of steam in the accessories department. My Tar-jay leopard belt has been a workhorse these past 9 months and needs to be replaced soon.

It's a good thing I'm able to work from home during the last two weeks or so of pregnancy. If my belly is hanging out, at least nobody will see it. Plus, my black dress pants might start a mutiny.

Flip Flop Weather

We're finally having consistent flip flop weather in Chicago and I couldn't be more excited! Maybe it's all the years of swimming, but I love being able to walk around in flip flops all.the.time! And I'm really loving flip flops and sandals this year because my feet don't always fit into regular shoes. And of course her little outfit needed some mini accessories. Those headbands by Little Hip Squeaks are currently sold out and sell like hotcakes once they're available. I managed to snag a set in different colors/patterns and can't wait for them to arrive. And what about those baby Havaianas? Adorbs.

By the way, Havaianas has recently started shipping all orders at a $1 flat rate which has been reduced from $8. Baby-sized shipping costs for baby-, kid-, and adult-sized flip flops and shoes...sign me up!

Now that we have outfits covered for next year's Mother's Day/summer, how about an activity? Oh Happy Day posted DIY instructions for making a giant popsicle pinata. And wouldn't you know, it coordinates perfectly!
